We are a high-growth Series-B FinTech start-up with over $40m of VC funding using data and machine learning to revolutionise the insurance industry. You will be joining a mission-driven team, leading the engineering team building a customer facing product that fundamentally changes the way commercial insurers process risk.

 
Your work will help to direct, build and deliver Cytora’s Risk Stream, a serverless and cloud native SaaS platform that automates the digitisation, evaluation and decisioning of risks for commercial insurers. Our product drastically improves the working lives of our users, enables our customers to cover more risks, more competitively, and unlocks innovation.
 
What we’re looking for
We are looking for a leader with a strong B2B product engineering background to grow the engineering team to 50+ people in the next couple of years, building the next generation of our platform. This leader will bring technical depth (strong Python ecosystem background is required because our product is data heavy), people leadership, high growth company mindset background, product and commercial nous, and will act as a talent magnet.
 
Role Remit
Cytora is now a Remote First business and, as such, the Head/VP Engineering can be based anywhere in the UK or EEA, reporting to the COO, Juan de Castro (based in London).
 
The Head of Engineering will be an expert technologist, excited to deliver a radical vision of the future of insurance. They will have a heritage as an exceptional software engineer and will be able to have detailed technical conversations with any member of their team, at all levels. They will be credible, inspiring and empathetic, and a person that the team can learn from.
 
In addition to being an exceptional technologist, the Head/VP Engineering will be an outstanding and empathetic people leader and communicator. They will be a builder of relationships, connecting the Engineering organisation with the rest of the business.
 
In short, the Head/VP of Engineering’s job is to make everyone in the engineering organisation successful.
 
Key responsibilities of the role will include, but not be limited to:
 
* Set, develop, and narrate engineering strategy internally and externally
 
* Recruit, motivate, and develop talented engineers, creating future leaders
 
* Promote a culture of modern, high-performance, Agile software engineering
 
* Cultivate customer understanding and empathy
 
* Bring new Insurance tech products to market
 
* Partner with international sales to drive revenue growth
 
* Bring technical credibility and lead both operational and strategic engineering initiatives
 
* Stay up to date with new technologies and be able to be technically hands-on
 
* Help improve the technology stack which includes: AWS services; React, Redux on the UI; Python and some Golang on the backend; Python on the Data Science side; deployed with CircleCI to Kubernetes and AWS Lambda; various databases like PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, BigQuery, ElasticSearch; testing solutions with SonarCloud, BlazeMeter, BrowserStack and some other tools; following the infrastructure as code principal using Terraform and CloudFormation.
 
Requirements
The new Head/VP Engineering will be an exceptional engineer and people leader, and will thrive on building, developing, and retaining world-class teams. They will have demonstrable experience of managing and scaling engineering teams within a high-growth start-up environment. They will have extensive experience of being an exceptional software engineer, ideally working in cloud native B2B SaaS environments. They will be hungry, passionate, and excited to join Cytora on its exciting journey and join the leadership team in this crucial role.
 
  • TECHNICAL DEPTH - will be very technically strong, having begun their career in a hands-on role as a developer / software engineer. They will have a proven track record of successfully creating and delivering innovative and disruptive technology products and propositions, and bring a strong end-to-end understanding of tech best-practice.
  • PEOPLE LEADERSHIP - will be an inspiring and engaging people leader, able to set a vision and bring people with them. They will have demonstrable experience of directly leading teams of at least 10+ engineers, and preferably beyond this scale. They will have a proven track record of retaining diverse top-tier talent.
  • GROWTH COMPANY MINDSET/EXPERIENCE – will have worked previously in a tech start-up / scale-up environment, with significant experience of playing a key role in a growing, dynamic business. They will approach challenges with an ambitious and aspirational mind-set, challenging their teams to deliver at pace whilst maintaining an exceptionally high technical bar and to never settle for second best.
  • TALENT MAGNET - will have a proven track record of attracting diverse high-calibre engineers with strong technical backgrounds. They will have experience of having previously scaled an engineering team in a start-up / high-growth environment, and will help to continue creating an employer brand for the engineering function at Cytora, in order to continue to attract top-tier talent and raise Cytora’s profile within the engineering community globally.
  • PRODUCT & COMMERCIAL NOUS - will have strong prioritisation skills, ensuring that the team are working on the right things at the right time. Will be able to effectively balance a wide range of challenges, from technical debt to new product development, and will gain buy-in from other stakeholders when it comes to resourcing and investment decisions.
